Cymru South clubs Pontardawe Town and Trefelin BGC have both decided to promote from within after naming their new first-team managers.

Pontardawe Town have announced that current first-team player Garry Taylor will take charge as manager of the club.

Taylor had been a player coach and was part of Andrew Stokes’ backroom staff before his departure to Pontypridd Town.

The 35-year-old made 20 appearances in the Ardal South West last season, getting three assists and two goals as they claimed the league title.

Now after previously holding the role as captain, he will be entrusted to lead the club forward as they prepare for their first season in the second tier in seven years.

Speaking to the club’s official website on his appointment, Taylor said: “I am very much looking forward to continuing the great work that Andrew has put in place over the previous three seasons.

“To play for the club, captain the club, and now manage the club is a huge privilege for me. This is a challenge I am really looking forward to and we will all be relishing our first season in the JD Cymru South”.

Elsewhere in the division, Trefelin BGC have looked to Andrew Mumford to take over the Port Talbot club.

Trefelin, finished 11th last season in the Cymru South, parted ways with Richie Ryan almost immediately after the campaign had concluded.

Former Swansea City midfielder Mumford was part of the coaching staff last season alongside Michael Chaves and Robert Cockings.

The 40-year-old was at the Swans for a decade and had stints at a number of Welsh teams like Port Talbot, Aberystwyth, Llanelli and Haverfordwest County.

“I am grateful to everyone at Trefelin BGC for placing the trust in me to be the first team manager at the club,” said Mumford to Trefelin’s website

“Having been part of Trefelin over the last year it’s obvious that it’s a special place and I am excited to play a leading role in the next chapter for the first team.

“The club already has a fantastic group of players in the squad and with the success of our Youth and Under 16s teams last season I look forward to developing a strong and competitive team going forward.”

Club chairman Steve Green added: “Andrew has been a fantastic positive influence on the club recently and the committee and I are delighted he has accepted the offer to become our first team manager.

“Andrew’s vision for the development of the first team is fully in line with our ambitions for the club as a whole. We all look forward to the new season in the JD Cymru South Division with Andrew as manager.”
