Carmarthen Town 3 – 1 Newtown

Welsh Premier League – Saturday 15t October 2016

An entertaining game in which both teams played their part ended with Carmarthen claiming all three points at Richmond Park.

Ahead of the match, both teams found themselves occupying the bottom two positions in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League. Carmarthen Town went into it on the back of three consecutive league defeats, while Newtown’s only win this season had come against Carmarthen in August.

The competitive nature of the game was evident within 10 seconds of the start when a tackle by Kieran Lewis received a yellow card from referee Bryn Markham Jones. Newtown dominated the opening minutes, with Luke Boundford firing over from 10 yards.

Carmarthen, however, against the run of play, took the lead on 13 minutes, Declan Carroll played in Liam Thomas to coolly slot home into the bottom right hand corner.

Newtown responded on the front foot and on 20 minutes Old Gold keeper Lee Idzi produced a brilliant one handed save down to his left from a header by Alex Fletcher. Newtown were not to be denied for much longer, three minutes later Joe Newton’s low cross missed Carmarthen and Newtown players but was met at the far post Luke Boundford to equalise with his head.

With the half coming to a close a Neil Mitchell cross was headed across goal by Tom Goodwin but there was no one to meet the ball and it bounced agonisingly wide.

The second half began the same as the first half with Newtown pushing Carmarthen back and following a long throw Shane Sutton forced a spectacular save from Lee Idzi as the ball was about to nestle in the top right hand corner. This save galvanised Carmarthen and they began to get a better grip on the game.

On 60 minutes, Carmarthen scored again, a towering header from Dave Vincent after a Kieran Lewis corner. Carmarthen were now on top dominating the tempo of the game however Idzi had to be at his best still to save again from Sutton and Goodwin.

In the 80th minute with their fitness showing, Carmarthen moved forward on the right with Kyle Bassett, his cross was cleared, Kieran Lewis returned the ball into the box, Ceri Morgan stretched to set up Liam Thomas who struck high into the top right hand corner from 15 yards. Mark Jones could have made it 4 in the final minute but he fired just wide after Bassett’s through ball.

Carmarthen Town now travel to Airbus UK in their next fixture and Newtown play TNS at Park Hall.
